A Legend, Faithfully Cut

The Cessna L-19/O-1 Bird Dog was the U.S. Army's primary liaison and observation aircraft from the Korean War through Vietnam — light, slow, and highly maneuverable, used in forward air control and artillery spotting for over two decades. Vailly Aviation's 1/4 scale design steps up the presence and power from the 1/5 scale version while keeping the same docile flight characteristics that make the Bird Dog one of the most approachable giant-scale builds available.

Kit Cutters supplies the precision laser-cut wood. This guide covers the rest: the honest, model-specific list of what you'll buy to complete it, with real sources for every part.

Vailly specifies 38–50cc gas for the 1/4 scale. The DA-50R is a popular choice, providing strong performance while keeping the finished weight in the 18–24 lb range.

The Build Journey

The 1/4 scale Bird Dog shares the same approachable build character as the 1/5 scale — fixed gear, conventional layout, no complex systems. The larger size makes sheeting and handling slightly more involved, but the basic structure is the same proven Vailly design. Treat these ranges as a rough sense of scope, not a fixed estimate.

Where a short kit saves you time

Vailly Aviation's plans show all structures drawn full size with full-size templates for all ribs, formers, and parts. A Kit Cutters short kit removes the entire cutting stage — your parts arrive precision laser-cut and labeled, so you start at assembly with a cleaner, more accurate fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

The short kit is laser-cut wood parts only. To complete it you'll also need the Vailly Aviation plans, spars and sheeting, a 38–50cc gas engine, fiberglass cowl, aluminum landing gear, covering, and finishing supplies. The "Everything Else You Need" section above lists each item with a source.
Vailly Aviation specifies 38–50cc gas for the 1/4 scale version. The DA-50R is a popular choice. At 18–24 lb finished weight the Bird Dog remains docile and forgiving — the ZDZ-50 is also used by builders wanting a bit more authority.
Plans are purchased separately from Nick Ziroli Plans (ziroligiantscaleplans.com), who distributes Vailly Aviation plans in the US. The 1/4 scale L-19 plan is $50. Kit Cutters supplies the laser-cut wood; Ziroli supplies the plans and model-specific accessories including the cowl and aluminum gear.
The 88.5" version is 1/5 scale (23–35cc, 11–14 lb) and the 108" version is 1/4 scale (38–50cc, 18–24 lb). The 1/4 scale has more presence in the air and suits higher-power setups. Accessories are not interchangeable between scales — confirm you are ordering 1/4 scale parts.
Yes — the Bird Dog is one of the most approachable giant-scale builds available in either scale. Vailly describes it as having docile flight characteristics, and the fixed gear and conventional layout make it far less complex than the warbirds. The 1/4 scale gives more presence in the air than the 1/5 scale with the same forgiving nature.
No. The short kit is wood parts only. The 1/4 scale fiberglass cowl is sold separately through Nick Ziroli Plans (Vailly Aviation). The aluminum landing gear struts are also sold separately. Specify 1/4 scale when ordering — the 1/5 scale versions are not compatible.
