The F6F Hellcat was designed to replace the F4F Wildcat and out dueled the faster F4U Corsair which had carrier landing problems. Introduced in 1943 it proved to be more than a match for the Japanese Zero and downed more enemy aircraft than any other in the Pacific Theater.
