One of the true classic company, designers and aircraft of the Golden Age of Racing. Take the largest most powerful engine of the day and build the smallest aircraft around it and you have the Granville Brothers Gee Bee R1 and R2 racers. Until very recently, the Gee Bee R1 and R2 racers were not successfully flown by any other pilot than Jimmy Doolittle. Doolittles great knowledge of aircraft and his skill as a pilot allowed him to not only fly the original R1 racer but he raced and won the 1932 Thompson race with this aircraft. Several decades later Delmar Benjamin built and flew a R2 replica, demonstrated the aircraft at air shows flying inverted as well as other amazing manuevers.
